<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Robco Electric, Inc. (License # 44324) has partnered with Paul Rich to bring Nevada licensed Realtors a new Continuing Education certified class on dealing with solar contracts during resale transactions. The class covers how to determine what type of solar contract is present, how to decipher what is in the Agreement/Contract, how to locate lost records on the system, how to assist clients in obtaining the highest resale value on their solar systems, how to Buy Out Lease/PPA agreements and how to obtain service on a system if the original installer is no longer in business. This timely information will make Realtors more solar-savvy and help Robco solar clients get more value from their solar investments when their homes are sold.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The class was written and is taught by Robco Electric Senior Solar Consultant Krystal Hosmer with assistance from Terry Farr, a Robco solar customer who is a licensed Appraiser. With more than 14 years of experience dealing with all kinds of solar contracts, Krystal is uniquely qualified to assist Realtors in reading these contracts and helping their clients navigate a solar home transaction. This effort is part of Robco’s ongoing mission to provide education about solar wherever it can benefit our community.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The next class is on December 9<sup>th</sup>, 2024, and another class is scheduled for January 2025.</p>

There are no other rebates or incentives currently available in Nevada. The NV Energy rebate expired on 6-5-2019. The smaller rural utilities have also ended their solar rebate programs.</p><h2>The Federal Solar Tax Credit</h2><p>The <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-5695" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal solar tax credit</a><span style="color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-style: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-style ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );"> will help you </span>pay for your solar system. You can use this federal tax credit if you owe federal income taxes, even if you usually get a refund.</p><h2>Get your hard-earned money back!</h2><p>This is the largest, non-income limited tax credit you can get.<br />It is 30% of the cost of your system. On a $20,000 system, $6,000 of your hard-earned dollars go right back into YOUR POCKET!</p><p>It’s not a tax deduction. Tax credits reduce how much you owe in taxes DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, not how much money you pay taxes on. That usually means a MUCH BIGGER refund at tax time!<br />You can carry over unused solar tax credits to future tax years, so the balance will roll over to the next tax year even if you cannot use the entire solar tax credit in the first year.</p><p>If you lease the system, the federal solar tax credit goes to the system owner – not you! Whoever owns those panels gets the solar tax credit, so before you lease, consider carefully what you are giving up.</p><h2>So what exactly does the solar tax credit do?</h2><p>Many people mistakenly think you get a check in the mail for 30% of the purchase cost of your solar system. Nope. That would be a rebate. There are no rebates available for solar in Nevada. Does that mean you take 30% of the install cost and remove that from your earned income when filing your Federal income taxes? Nope. That would be a tax deduction, not a tax credit. A tax deduction reduces the amount of income you pay taxes on. It’s valuable, but tax credits are FAR more valuable.</p><p>Here’s an example of a tax deduction. If you make $100,000 (gross income), you get to deduct $12,400 (standard deduction for a single taxpayer); you are only taxed on $87,600 of income (taxable income). If your tax bracket was 15%, your total tax liability would be reduced from $15,000 on the entire $100,000 income to $13,140 on a reduced taxable income of $87,600. That tax deduction saved you $1,860 on your tax bill. Nice.. but you still owe $13,140 in taxes.</p><p>Tax credits, on the other hand, reduce the amount you pay in federal income taxes. They are FAR more valuable because they reduce your tax bill. You pay $1 less in federal income taxes for every $1 in your solar tax credit.</p><p>Let’s say you had a total federal tax withholding for the year of $15,000, and you owed $10,000 in federal income taxes for the year. Your solar tax credit is $8,500.</p><p>If you had no solar tax credit: $10,000 owed – $15,000 paid = $5,000 refund</p><p>With the solar tax credit: $10,000 owed – $8,500 tax credit = $1,500 owed – $15,000 paid = $13,500 REFUND !!!!!!!</p><p>As long as you have US federal income tax liability and own your home, you can use the federal solar tax credit against your income taxes – no matter what the source of your taxable income is (W-2 wages, 1099 income, interest, dividends, etc.) The solar tax credit does not reduce other kinds of taxes such as self-employment tax or property taxes. It only reduces your federal income tax liability.</p><p>Some folks get especially confused and think they can’t use the solar tax credit if they already get a tax refund. Good News! Even if you usually get a federal income tax refund, the federal solar tax credit will still work for you. You’ll likely get a much larger refund the year you go solar because you’ll owe a lot less in taxes thanks to the solar tax credit – just like the example above. As long as you owed taxes, to begin with, the solar tax credit could benefit you. You can even stack it up with other tax credits like the child tax credit or dependent care credit.</p><p>What if you usually owe taxes at the end of the year? The federal solar tax credit can help you, too! If you owe less money in taxes to begin with because of the solar tax credit, you could get a refund this year! Even getting $5 back would be better than saying a lot of nasty words while you write a $5,000 check to the IRS, right?</p><p>The only folks who can’t use the federal solar tax credit are those with no US taxable income and thus no tax liability, such as a person on 100% Disability or whose only income is from Social Security or those who do not own their home.</p><p><strong>ALWAYS SEEK PROFESSIONAL TAX ADVICE BEFORE YOU MAKE A DECISION ON SOLAR!</strong> Taxes and tax credits are complicated things. These simplified examples are meant to help you understand how the solar tax credit works in a general way. We are <strong>NOT</strong> tax planners, tax accountants, or CPAs. 									<p>By Chelsey Mason &#8211; Solar Consultant</p><h4>Should you buy or lease your solar system?</h4><p>There are two ways to get solar: buy it yourself or rent it from a solar company. The biggest thing to consider when deciding between buying and leasing is who receives the federal solar income tax credit. Since the tax credit can be worth thousands of dollars, you should carefully consider this.</p><p>LEASING PANELS</p><p><strong>PROS:</strong></p><ul><li>Zero out-of-pocket cost because you are not purchasing the equipment. You are agreeing to buy the power the system produces on a monthly basis for 15, 20 or 25 years.</li><li>May offer a lower starting price per <u><a href="https://www.nvenergy.com/account-services/energy-pricing-plans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kWh </a></u>than what the utility charges, but not always.</li><li>Warranty &amp; Maintenance is usually included at zero cost because you do not own the system; they do.</li><li>Transferable at-home sale</li></ul><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>CONS:</strong></p><ul><li>The Solar company gets the federal income tax credit, not you!</li></ul><ul><li>No control over panel or inverter type</li><li>Because you do not own the system, you do not own the kilowatt hours it creates. Instead, you are agreeing to buy all the electricity the system produces for the entire term of the Agreement at whatever cost per kilowatt hour the Agreement specifies &#8211; regardless of how that compares to the utility’s cost per kilowatt hour. You could pay MORE for power from solar than the power company charges if the cost per kilowatt hour is higher than what the utility charges. Savings over the utility are never guaranteed with a leased system.</li></ul><ul><li>These types of Agreement almost always have an annual increase (usually 1-3%) in your contract. It is possible for the annual escalator to push the cost you pay for solar higher than the cost per kilowatt hour from your utility at some point in the 15, 20 or 25 years of the Agreement.</li></ul><ul><li>No added resale value.</li></ul><ul><li>These Agreements are almost impossible to break without substantial monetary penalties being assessed. Despite what the sales rep may say, no third party owned system “will be removed for free if you don’t want it anymore.”</li></ul><ul><li>Can slow down or stop a home sale as some people do not want to assume a lease or because it negatively impacts their debt-to-income ratio so that they no longer qualify for the mortgage.</li></ul><ul><li>The system cannot be moved out of the NV Energy service territory.</li></ul><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>BUYING PANELS</strong></p><p><strong>PROS:</strong></p><ul><li>You get the federal income tax credit.</li><li>You are buying equipment, not kilowatt hours so the cost never changes.</li><li>Full Warranty from the manufacturer and the installer</li><li>Increased resale value</li><li>No Agreement or monthly payments for a new owner to assume or worry about.</li><li>Full control over panel and inverter type</li><li>The system can be moved anywhere you move</li><li>No early termination fees</li><li>Guaranteed return on investment as high as 8-10%</li><li>Cash price is the cheapest, with many affordable zero or low-money-down financing options available</li></ul><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>CONS:</strong></p><ul><li>You must pay cash or finance the purchase</li><li>A down payment may be required</li></ul><p> </p><p>CONCLUSION</p><p>Unless you cannot use the tax credit because you are no longer working and do not pay federal income taxes, you should buy your system instead of leasing it. We offer low-rate financing options for customers with good credit and competitive prices in the Las Vegas market.</p>								</div>

									<p>When comparing Las Vegas Solar Installers&#8217; prices, it can be hard to determine if System A, System B, and System C are apples-to-apples. Different panels, inverters, and even&nbsp;panel placements can mean a HUGE difference in payback time and value for your buck. It’s not always the cheapest Las Vegas solar company that offers the best value for your money. <p>Below, we’ll walk you through comparing purchase prices for rooftop solar systems in Las Vegas. With this handy chart and the ranges listed for Las Vegas, you’ll quickly be able to determine which bid offers the best value for your money.</p>
<h2>Step 1: Do Your Homework On Any Las Vegas Solar Company</h2>
<p>The lowest price in the world won’t mean much if the company is not licensed to install solar in NV or has run afoul of contracting laws. Before you call someone for a quote, you should check their license with the <a style="text-decoration-line: underline;" href="https://app.nvcontractorsboard.com/Clients/NVSCB/Public/ContractorLicenseSearch/ContractorLicenseSearch.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nevada State Contractors Board.</a> They should have an active C2 Commercial Electrical or a C2G (solar electrical only) license in good standing. The bid limit on the license should be greater than the quoted cost of your project, and there should be NO disciplinary action against their license.</p>
<p>You can search licenses by license number, company name, or principal name. The license number should be on their bid, business cards, website, company vehicles, and marketing materials. If you have trouble locating a license number, that’s a red flag. NV Law requires that a contractor be properly licensed for the work and display their license number prominently.</p>
<p>If you cannot find a valid contractor license for the company, or the name on the license does not match the name on the bid/emails/folders, or if they tell you some other company is doing the actual installation, that means you are talking to a lead generator or a solar broker/marketing company. <p>What if they are an unlicensed solar company, but they gave you a low price for solar?</p>
<p>It’s tempting to go for that super low price sometimes offered by unlicensed contractors or ones who are in trouble with the Board. Contracting in NV without a valid license is a crime. Suppose you choose to hire an unlicensed contractor. In that case, you are taking on a considerable risk if they damage your home, someone gets hurt on your property during installation, or they do not complete the installation as promised. Here are some more tips from the Contractors Board on selecting a good quality contractor.</p>
<p>Next, check their reviews on Yelp!, Google, Facebook, Nextdoor, the Better Business Bureau, or any other review site you like. If you cannot find any reviews or you see many one and two-star ones, move to the next company on your list.</p>
<p>Lastly, look for add-on fees such as monthly monitoring costs, pigeon proofing, or warranty extension fees. These things should already be included in the price.</p>
<h2>Step 2: Compare Solar Equipment Types</h2>
<p>Are you comparing apples-to-apples or apples-to-oranges? Are the companies using monocrystalline or polycrystalline panels? What type of inverters are they using? How many watts are in the panels? <h2>Step 3: Compare Value For The Money</h2>
<p>These four numbers on the bid are the most important for figuring out where the best value in a Las Vegas Solar Company is for the money.</p>

<h3>Cost per Watt:</h3>
<p>All Las Vegas Solar Company prices are quoted as an “all in” price. The price includes the panels, inverters, racking, labor, permits, engineering, HOA approval, clips, rails, clamps, warranty costs, overhead, insurance, and everything else that goes into installing your system. In solar, the cost per watt is the unit price &#8211; like the price for a gallon of gas. You’re going to buy the whole tank, but you decide which station to stop at based on who has the lowest price per gallon. Same thing here.</p>
<p>You can use the cost per watt number to figure out which Las Vegas Solar Company is giving you the best deal for the money. Remember, the cheapest Las Vegas solar company bid you got may not be the best value for your money.</p>
<p>Figuring out the cost per watt on your Las Vegas Solar Company bid is easy.</p>
<p>Cost of system divided by how many watts are in the system = Cost Per Watt.</p>
<h4>Here’s an example:</h4>
<p>The system costs <strong>$35,989</strong> before the tax credit is applied. It’s made up of (37) 330-watt panels, so it’s 12.21 kW in size. (To get the watts for the cost per watt formula, multiply the kW by 1,000. A kilowatt is 1,000 watts.)</p>
<p>$35,989/12,210 watts = <strong>$2.94 per watt</strong></p>
<p>In Las Vegas, the average COST PER WATT (As of 3/2023) for solar is about $2.90-$3.20 if you pay cash. (It is about $3.10-$3.60/watt if you finance &#8211; depending on the loan term.) You should see prices between $2.90 &#8211; $3.60 a watt. You should ask many questions if you see a price outside this range.</p>
<p>Solar companies selling far below average might not have the financial strength to be here to take care of you. They may be desperate for work. They could be using cheap or end-of-life equipment. Maybe their customer service is terrible? Is it worth taking the chance that a low price is worth the extra headaches if you cannot get someone to fix things or answer questions?</p>
<p>Solar companies selling far above the average cost per watt may be hiding very high loan financing fees in the purchase price or paying very high sales commissions to brokers. Overpaying for solar can cause you a big headache down the line &#8211; especially if the loan they sold you has to be paid off before your home can be sold. <p>Doing the math on the cost per watt can help you pinpoint the best deal and who to avoid.</p>
<h3>Net Cost:</h3>
<p>The cost for the system after the federal solar tax credit is factored in; this is the actual out-of-pocket cost for your system. Remember, the tax credit is NOT a rebate. Click here to learn more about how it works.</p>
<h4>kWh Produced in Year 1:</h4>
<p>When you go solar, you buy equipment and installation expertise, but what you are after is cheaper cleaner kilowatt-hours!</p>
<p>The real value in a system is how much power you get out of that equipment each year. The amount of power used now that is being replaced by production from your solar system is shown on proposals as an Offset %. A properly sized solar system will show an offset of 95% to just over 100%. Learn more about how solar systems are sized here.</p>
<p>Each solar bid you collect should list how many kilowatt-hours you use in a year now and how many kilowatt-hours the system is expected to produce in the first year. Those two numbers should be very close together. Nobody gets rich selling solar kwh back to the power company. Oversizing your solar system to make more power than you use has no financial benefit to you.</p>
<p><strong>Pro Tip</strong> &#8211; Check their math! Before comparing the annual output of the systems you are looking at, you need to check that their power output projections match what you use. Your solar system will not deliver what you expect if they are based on an average bill or an incorrect annual use total.</p>
<p>You can get a good idea of your annual use number by looking at your NV Energy bill. There is a bar graph in the upper left corner. Add up the amount shown by the blue bars (the gray bars are the year before) for the last 12 months. If your total annual kilowatt hours are used and their total is more than 500 kWh different, that is a red flag that other things in the proposal might also be inaccurate.</p>
<p>Next, check their production totals using the National Renewable Energy Lab PVwatts calculator. No matter how low the price is, if the annual use number or expected system production number is wrong, what else would be wrong about the deal they offer? Once you’ve checked the math, you can now compare the value.</p>
<p>Since solar costs less than getting power from traditional sources and it NEVER goes up in price, more solar is better. A system that delivers 75% of your annual power use is not as good of a value as a system that delivers 100% of your needs.</p>
<p>The proposed solar system sizes should roughly equal the bids you collect when comparing solar prices.</p>
<p>All of your bids should show about the same number of panels needed. Most installers use 330 to 400-watt panels, so we should all land at about the same system size &#8211; give or take 2-4 panels. So, if you have four bids and 3 of them show that you need 24-26 panels, but the last one says they can get the job done with 16 panels and provide the same 100% offset, something doesn’t add up. It would be like a car dealer telling you this little four-cylinder sedan has the same amount of power in the engine as this giant work truck. That’s impossible. 16 solar panels can’t create as much energy as 26 solar panels.</p>
<h3>Payback in Years:</h3>
<p>Net Cost of System/Annual Cost of Power Produced by the System = Payback Time in Years</p>
<p>In Las Vegas, payback time averages 6-12 years for a system purchased outright using this simple payback formula. This number might not be listed on your proposal, but it’s effortless to figure out. You divide the annual power value the system makes into the system’s net cost to see how many years of full-price power it would take to equal your solar system’s net cost. Since power rates from NV Energy can go up or down, we’ll use today’s per kWh price to estimate payback time.</p>
<h4>System A:</h4>
<p>This system makes 16,849 kWh annually. As of January 1, 2023, NV Energy charges 14.44 cents a kWh for electricity. So, the value of the 16,849 kWh x .1444 = $2,432. The system you are evaluating costs $17,675 after applying for the tax credit.</p>
<p>$17,675/$2,432 = <strong>7.26-year payback</strong></p>
<h4>System B:</h4>
<p>This system makes 12,496 kWh annually. At 14.44 cents a kWh, the value of that power is $1, 804. The system you are evaluating costs $21,203 after applying for the solar tax credit.</p>
<p>$21,203/$1,804 = <strong>11.75-year payback</strong></p>
<p><strong>System A</strong> from a Las Vegas Solar Company is the better value in this example.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you need to clean your solar panels? The simple answer is NO. Solar panels are designed to be outside for decades operating just fine with a light layer of dust.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A drizzly rainy day is a free solar panel cleaning! Thanks, Mother Nature! Solar panels are typically installed at an angle, which allows rainwater to clean the surface naturally. You don’t need to get on the roof and risk hurting yourself. If there&#8217;s no rain, using a garden hose with a sprayer head is perfectly fine to rinse off your panels. DO NOT USE ANY CLEANING SOLUTIONS, and never when the outside temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If rainwater or homeowner cleaning is insufficient to remove all the dirt and debris, you can schedule an appointment with Robco, and we will clean them for you at our regular service rate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s important to follow the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions for cleaning and maintenance and any safety precautions for accessing the solar panels.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have gotten some variation of this question about 1,000 times in the last 3 summers from customers who have had solar for years and are used to only seeing $15 or so on their NV Energy bill.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">WHAT GIVES??????</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">2019 was the last &#8220;normal&#8221; year for solar production in the Las Vegas Valley. You can see from the chart in the right the smooth production curve (Blue bars) where solar output peaks during the hot summer months, right as our consumption is also peaking for the year (orange bars).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A parade of Black Swan Solar Events have hit Las Vegas for 3 straight years. As solar pros, we can&#8217;t design for these unforeseen extreme events. We can&#8217;t even imagine these kind of crazy changes to people&#8217;s behavior and the weather patterns happening year after year.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Black Swan Parade</h3>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2020: The Stay-at-Home Year</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2020, the global pandemic shook our collective world. The widest spread Black Swan event to hit modern civilization since WWII. Starting in March of 2020, the stay-at-home orders spiked power use by about 20% for the average household. Turns out, if people are at home more, they use a lot more power. More TV, more computer, more air conditioning, more vacuuming, more cooking, more everything! Look at the orange bars in the 2020 image compared to 2019. Those measure my house&#8217;s total consumption. See the spike in March that lasts all year? My solar system (and all the others in Las Vegas) was making power&#8230;but we were all using WAAAAAAAY more power than usual. The systems don&#8217;t magically make more power than they were designed to produce, just like the engine in your car doesn&#8217;t somehow transform from a 4 cylinder to an 8 cylinder. So, if your power use increased by 20%, you&#8217;re going to have an after solar power bill because you&#8217;ll be buying that extra power from NV Energy at full retail price.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">2021: The Year of Fire Haze and Extreme Heat</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2021, solar and power use got smacked by a different &#8220;Black Swan” event. This one was localized to the Western US and Las Vegas was right next door to the hardest hit region. Most folks had returned to a more usual amount of at home time… but then in the summer of 2021, the west coast was ablaze with out of control wildfires for months on end. The smoky haze from our neighbor&#8217;s disaster movie existence settled over the entire Las Vegas valley. Remember those days when the sky was just a glowing orange haze and it looked like we had all moved to Tatooine or Mars? That particulate dense smoke blocked sunlight from hitting the city&#8217;s solar panels at the same level it usually does during those cloudless, long sunny days. You can see the noticeable dip in production (blue bars) during the summer of 2021. So, every solar system made less power than usual that year because there was a lot less sunlight to work with. The extreme heat also didn’t help. Power use spiked again over the summer trying to keep folks cool during the hottest summer ever recorded in Las Vegas. So for 2021, you had both LESS POWER being made AND HIGHER POWER DEMAND. Thus, for the second summer<br>running, we all bought more power from the NV Energy grid to fill the gap.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-left">2022:The Cloudiest Summer in a Decade</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now here in 2022, we have yet another Black Swan event mucking up solar land. This summer had the longest, wettest, cloudiest monsoon season we’ve seen in 10 years! (This here black swan had a silver lining, though, because we sure needed that water desperately!) Again, solar needs clear skies and long sunny days to hit maximum output over the summer and we didn&#8217;t get them for most of the summer. Temps were not as extreme as last summer, so we didn’t see quite the same 1-2 punch with reduced production AND higher power demand, but still the effect was enough that yet again a big old dip in the blue production bars over the summer means here we all are buying more power than normal from the grid to fill the gap.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In summary, solar needs clear, sunny skies for maximum power output. The last 3 years haven’t seen that during the summer, so every solar customer in the city is seeing bigger than usual after solar power bills.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’re sure you&#8217;ve noticed by now that supply chains across industries have faced notable disruptions. Of course, the solar supply chain is no exception. Today, we&#8217;re here to talk about what&#8217;s going on in the solar industry and, more importantly, what Robco is doing to ensure that you feel as little of the adverse effects as possible.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you previously received quotes from installation companies for your solar project and request new ones today, it is likely you&#8217;ll see notable price increases or be informed that the company isn&#8217;t able to commit to completing your install due to a lack of materials.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With companies facing pinch-points and rising component prices, many have no choice but to pass on these expenses to you, the end customer. Perhaps what makes this shift so abrasive is the fact that people have become accustomed to the trend of solar prices decreasing every year as the industry grows and technology improves. This is the first time that the industry has seen prices increasing quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year across all market segments. Taking it a step further, Rystad Energy analysts estimate that shipping conflicts and rising material costs could result in 56% of 2022 solar projects worldwide being postponed or canceled completely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>So, where in the solar supply chain are these disruptions happening?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are two main points of disruption in the solar supply chain: port delays and material costs. Both of these issues feed into one another and serve to create a downward spiral for the industry&#8217;s supply chain as a whole.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With shipping backlogs at virtually all ports, product shortages and price increases are a given. Currently, shipping a container via a primary U.S. port takes three times as long as normal. At the Port of Los Angeles alone, roughly<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/18/business/container-port-record-backlog/index.html" target="_blank" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/18/business/container-port-record-backlog/index.html" rel="noreferrer noopener"> 200,000 shipping containers are still onboard ships</a> along the coast due to the current gridlock. Additionally, with the peak holiday season in full swing, the situation is set to face even greater pressure as demand increases even more. Current projections predict that port delays, and the resulting product shortages, will continue until mid-2022.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;On top of the increase in shipping prices and related conflicts, there have been drastic increases in material and manufacturing costs for solar panels. These price increases are the result of the bullwhip effect, which was triggered by the halting of production during the pandemic. Prior to manufacturers being shut down, there was a surplus of polysilicon available. However, once restrictions lifted and production began again, the economic bounce-back occurred faster than anticipated. As a result, demand exceeded what manufacturers were prepared to handle and prices skyrocketed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With an increase in the cost of polysilicon by over 300%, the manufacturing costs for modules have increased by nearly 50% between 2020 and the end of 2021. Other necessary raw materials have also seen price increases that have added pressure to the manufacturing costs and, in turn, increased the prices of panels themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Now that we understand what&#8217;s going on, what is Robco doing to serve you despite the disruptions?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Providing concierge style customer service is significant to everything we do, and an aspect of that is anticipating the pain points of our customers before they even have a chance to reach you. Knowing supply disruptions were only set to get worse, we ensured we secured enough inventory to cover our installations for the next six months.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>That&#8217;s right. When you sign your contract with us, you can rest assured knowing we are more than ready to complete your project.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With that being said, even with our preparedness, we aren&#8217;t immune to the inflation of material costs. In response to the increased prices of our manufacturers, you will see our quoted project costs increasing in January.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On a high level, solar panels work by creating an electric field that allows light particles (photons) to bump into electrons, freeing them from atoms and generating an electric current. This current flows through the metal contacts throughout the panel&#8217;s cells (the grid lines you see on your solar panel) to the inverters installed with your system, where it is converted from direct current to alternating current. From there, the flow continues to the grid and into your home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, how do solar panels create an electric field? An electric field occurs when opposite charges are separated, much like a magnetic field relies on opposite poles. To achieve this, solar panels are designed with slices of semiconducting material (meaning it is more conductive than an insulator, but less than a metal) that are specially treated to create one positive side and one negative side. This results in an electric field.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The current primary semiconductor used in solar panels is silicon, and it conducts electricity when energy is being provided by sunlight. After the blocks of crystalline silicon are cut into wafers and processed to separate the charges, they are combined with the metal contacts previously mentioned to enable the flow of the electrical current through the panel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s important to note that the semiconductor used in building the panel plays a big role in determining the efficiency of a solar panel. For example, silicon can be used to create monocrystalline panels or polycrystalline panels. Monocrystalline panels use one crystal of silicon, while polycrystalline panels combine many crystals. Because monocrystalline panels allow electrons to move for freely, these panels are more efficient and generate more electricity. Polycrystalline panels are less expensive to manufacture but are notably less efficient, especially in heat. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the semiconductor is a primary factor in determining the efficiency of a solar panel, there are also other external factors that can contribute to how much electricity your panels produce. Temperature, shade, and dirt on your panels can all impact the production of your system. Because of this, it is important to work with an installer who is knowledgeable about your specific location and who designs a thought-out system that caters to your home layout and energy needs.</p>
